Royal Caribbean Quantum Class Ships

Quantum class ships from Royal Caribbean revolutionized the way guests experience cruises. With multiple specialty dining restaurants, the Bionic Bar, Ripcord by iFly (a sky diving simulator), and North Star there is an activity for every age and interest aboard Anthem of the Seas, Ovation of the Seas, Quantum of the Seas, Spectrum of the Seas, and Odyssey of the Seas.

Any honest review of Quantum class ships has to include pros and cons. My experiences on these ships have been largely positive, I have no complaints whatsoever about the ships. The cons I hear from clients are preferences and all have to do with how big the ships are and how many people are onboard. If you prefer smaller ships, Quantum class is not going to be for you.

Lets begin with some numbers to give you an idea of just how big these ships are. Keep in mind, the information I’m giving you is specific to Quantum of the Seas and may be slightly different on the other ships.

  • 1,141 feet front to back
  • 136 feet wide
  • 168,666 GRT
  • 4,905 guests (4,180 double occupancy)
  • 2,094 staterooms
  • 1,500 crew members
  • 16 decks

Quantum class ships are big. Which allows Royal Caribbean to have plenty of things to do, places to eat (and drink), and just hang out.

There is no shortage of (free and small up-charge) things to do on Quantum class ships that aren’t available on the smaller, older ships. Like Ripcord by iFly, a skydiving simulator for those who want the feeling of skydiving without the, you know, risks. For those who are a little less adventurous, bumper cars or laser tag may be more your speed.

There’s also some activities that require more of an explanation, like North Star, a pod attached to an arm which lifts you high above the ship giving you an amazing 360 degree view. Also on some Quantum class ships is a very cool virtual reality game called Expedition Two70.

If you’ve been on a Royal Caribbean cruise or have friends and family who have, one thing everyone raves about is the entertainment. Quantum class ships dial the entertainment WAY up. More than “just” shows (which are fantastic on Royal), think aerialists, high dives, robots, and other thrilling entertainment.

Let’s switch to food (and drinks). There are so many options on the Quantum class ships. Many included in the cost of your cruise, some cost a little extra which you can pay while you’re onboard or buy a specialty dining package that includes a set number of meals. For drinks, either alcoholic or non, Royal has a variety of packages and most people choose one.

Your Quantum class ship may vary, but in general, there are a lot of food options included. Windjammer is Royal’s buffet where you’ll find lots of options for every palate for lunch, breakfast, and dinner. Doghouse is probably what you’d expect, a variety of toppings on traditional hotdogs or sausage. You can also find a slice of pizza at Sorrento’s or find a variety of grab-and-go meals (and a great view) at Two70. There’s also the main dining room, where the wait staff is fun and attentive and the menu changes every night.

Premium restaurants are a great experience and I highly recommend going at least once. Whether you choose Japanese at Izumi, Italian cuisine at Jamie’s, a delicious steak at Chops, or decide on a more experimental option like Wonderland you will not be disappointed by either the flavors or the service.

As we turn our attention to bars and lounges, you’ll find your place. Each has a different atmosphere and specialty. From sports and pool side bars to the Schooner Bar (where you’ll hear great music) and Vintage’s (which has a large selection of wines), there is a place for you to whet your whistle. One of the less “social” but great bars you have to visit while you’re onboard is the Bionic Bar. Step up to a tablet, order from a cocktail menu or create your own, and watch the robots get to work. It’s a lot of fun and very unique.

Some things, like Flowrider, crystal clear pools, and relaxing hot tubs are Royal Caribbean standards which you’ll also find on Quantum class ships. Other Royal staples include a beautiful spa, fitness center, casino, shopping, and what I consider to be the best youth program at sea.

The Quantum class may feature big ships, but they also feature big fun and big adventure. The ships are designed to deliver your best vacation and you’ll have a wonderful experience, get all your steps in getting from activity to activity, and won’t feel like you’re onboard with thousands of other people.
